Our Commitment
Innovation Rooted in Environmental Excellence
For over 40 years, North Shore Ballast has been a leader in the Maritime fishing and construction industries. Our commitment goes beyond building durable products—we are dedicated to protecting the Atlantic coastlines that sustain our communities.
Through innovative recycling practices and local manufacturing, we turn environmental challenges into high-performance concrete solutions.
Winner of the Mobius Award
We are proud recipients of the Mobius Award, recognizing our industry-leading efforts in waste reduction and environmental stewardship. This prestigious award highlights our role in diverted thousands of pounds of waste from Maritime landfills and oceans, proving that industrial strength and environmental care can go hand-in-hand.
2024 Small Business of the Year
Divert NS hosted the 24th annual Mobius Awards of Environmental Excellence Gala at the Halifax Convention Centre to recognize and celebrate innovative Nova Scotians who are leaders in environmental action and waste reduction.
North Shore Ballast and Concrete Works has proven innovative ways to divert significant tonnages of old materials from landfill including most of the province’s end-of-life wire lobster traps, which are large and made of a variety of materials, making it a challenge to dispose of properly. North Shore sources these traps from the fisher community in Nova Scotia and repurposes every part into new products, such as using repurposed materials to reinforce their concrete ballasts for long-lasting, stronger products. In doing so, North Shore has diverted over 10,000 lobster traps from our landfills.

Turning Waste Into Strength
Our Recycling Process
The core of our sustainability mission is our unique recycling program. We collect end-of-life wire lobster traps and "ghost gear" that would otherwise clutter our harbors or fill our local landfills.
The Circular Economy in Action
Instead of letting old wire traps become an environmental hazard, we process and repurpose them as structural reinforcement for our concrete products. This "circular" approach ensures that nothing goes to waste.
Collection
We work with local fishermen and organizations to collect thousands of retired wire traps.
Processing
The wire is cleaned and prepared for use as internal reinforcement.
Reinforcement
The recycled wire provides superior impact resistance and structural integrity to our lobster ballasts and precast products.
A Stronger Future for the Maritimes
By choosing North Shore Ballast, you are supporting a business that invests back into the health of our region. Our process doesn't just create a "greener" product—it creates a stronger one. The repurposed wire reinforcement creates a resilient concrete mix specifically designed to handle the rugged conditions of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI.
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us; it’s a way of ensuring that the Maritime fishing and construction industries can thrive for generations to come.
